Milpitas, California: Swedish
table tennis star Stellan Bengsston, World Champion 1971 Men's
Singles and also the holder of 67 International titles including the
1973 World's Doubles and Team Championships, and 7 European
Championships has made an appearance in SF Bay area- catering his
specialized skills to the Indian-American community.
Brought to
hone the skills of promising youngsters at club ICC Table Tennis club,
Bengsston and his wife Angie Rosal Bengtsson also a former USA team
member and at one time ranked #1 and #2 in the US, and 4-time Womens
Doubles Champion, and twicea US Singles runner-up, are busy
running drills at the ICC Mallavalli auditorium. The special camp if
for Beginner and Intermediate kids and also Advanced Level kids
followed by Adults Advanced Level (USATT Rating over 1900) . The camp
which ran from November 19-23rd and was held at India Community Center
(ICC) Milpitas.
“ I am
excited to see many talented Indian-American youngsters” says
bespectacled Bengsston. “ I have spotted a some very good
prospects and as they improve, you will notice good results very soon.”
Following
the success of ICC Table tennis team in various leagues across the Bay
area as well as a very stroing showing at the US junior Olympics in
2006 and 2007, winning several medals in every category they enetered,
each time- Coach Sheth got a shot in the arm via strong response from
the Indian American community. So much so that, Coach Sheth routinely
enters non Indian-origin players into Team ICC.
With 10
year old Parth Upadhyay and Aarsh Vyas responding to the Bengsston’s
coaching, alongside cute 8 year old Diane Jiang, already fans and
frequent visitors’ are seeing the difference.
“We plan
to enter regularly tournaments in the Bay area, hosted by Bay area
clubs like Concord, Stanford, Palo Alto, Berkeley,” says Coach Sheth,
and if recent successes are any indication, Team ICC will dominate
several age categories once again.
Adding to
the success of the kids is also the recent endorsement by corporate
sponsors JUIC and Paddle Palace, who awarded nine select players and
their coach with complete outfits from “toe to head’ including rubbers
for their table tennis bats, which routinely get replaced after a month
or so at cost of hundreds of dollars each.
Meanwhile
Coach Sheth is already planning ahead. With pressures of other ICC
programs and also rentals by third parties of the ICc Mallavalli
auditorium – which hosts the table tennis tables, Sheth, the director
of Sports and Recreation activities for ICC, has started scouting
for newer locations. “While we have identified some space at a school
in Milpitas and also in the city of Cupertino, now we are looking
for a (feasible) location that may include other indoor sports
offerings along with table tennis,”says Coach Sheth.
