India Govt.
Survives no Confidence Vote. A Win for Democracy & US-India
Nuclear Agreement
New
Delhi, Washington DC: By a vote of 275 for and 256 against
with 10 abstenstions, the UPA ruling government in India led by Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh, won by a much higher than expected
margin. This call for vote had a great saga and drama, as the UPA
Coalition giovernment saw some of its key allies including the
Communist parties withdrawing their support, creating a crisis.
Interestingly, bith the Leftist parties (communists and others) and the
Rightist parties (BJP-Hindu oriented party) are in agreement! They both
opposed the US India Nuclear agreement as it stands, saying that "India
would be wholly dependant on US" and it "was a question of sovereignity
of India at stake."
India can now seek the nuclear deal's approval from the
IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency and the NSG Nuclear Suppliers'
Group, a mandatory requirement before the U.S. Congress can ratify
it. ``We have to work with other parties who are not opposed to
economic reforms and we'll try to take forward the process,'' Finance
Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram told reporters after the confidence
vote.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, hailed the result as
a "convincing" win and said, "This will send a message to the world at
large that India's head and heart is sound, that India is prepared to
take its rightful place in the committee of nations."
The 2005 accord signed between Singh and President George
W. Bush gives India access to fuel and nuclear reactors without joining
the 1970 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It will lift restrictions
imposed on suppliers to provide India with atomic technologies since it
tested a nuclear weapon in 1974 without being listed as an atomic
weapons state.
The ratification of the ruling government also
boosts confidence in the economy, stability and business climate of
India, with reportedly some investors balking at further funding due to
the chaos surrounding the delay of the Us-India Civilian Nuclear
agreement.

COMMENTS:
Interestingly,
the Communist Party Spokesperson Karat and Others inclduing
scholars have decried the Debate and Voting and the results as a Blow
to Democracy.
I DISAGREE with them completely, since EVEN if you dont like the
results, the process happened ONLY because of Democracy!!
Lets ask each of them if the same events took place in China or Russia,
etc woukd a debate even have occured??
Of Course, the circus around the debate, the "horse trading" and
reported huge amounts of money being exchanged are something to decry
and be against but face it...that is part of "democracy"

so-so. The Czech pair of Eva Hrdinova and Vladimira Uhlirova, a
Tall and short playet combo seemed more motivated and pulled out

The
final result was a straight set loss 6-3, 6-4 and left a lot of
fans disappointed.
( especially those who snapped up tckets for semi finals and finals in
anticipation of last years run by Sania.) However Serena Williams is
still in the draw- after losing the first set to a 19 year old Michelle
Larcher De Brito 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 from Protugal and eventually winning.
Serena is always popular and entertaining, so fans will get their
moneys worth (Paisa Vasool)
